chapter 1

One night, animals become unquiet after Mr. Jones-the owner of the farm fell asleep, because they are going to have a meeting held by old Major-a pig which is so highly regarded on the farm. He mentioned, “Their lives are miserable, laborious, and short. They are just fed that they are able to work until they are not, and then they will surely be slaughtered with hideous cruelty. The life of an animal is misery and slavery-that is the plain truth.” At this moment, he continued his words with the reason why, “That is because nearly the whole of the produce of our labor is stolen from us by human beings. It is summed up in a single word--Man. Man is the only real enemy we have. Remove Man from the scene and the root cause of hunger and overwork is abolished for ever.” Besides, “man is the only creature that consumes without producing” he added, in order to prove it he took eggs, milk, foals for example, all of them are produced by the animals but none of them can be returned to them self.” All in all, how they can live in a world of peace, old Major said “only get rid of Man, and the produce of our labor would be our own. Almost overnight we could become rich and free. What then must we do, that is Rebellion!” And then old Major encouraged the animals to begin their Rebellion without questioning, but they should remember, “And among us animals let there be perfect unity, perfect comradeship in the struggle. All men are enemies. All animals are comrades. Remember that Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend.” Furthermore, he listed some rules:

1. They should follow that are they must not come to resemble human beings. Even when you have conquered him, do not adopt his vices.
2. No animal must ever live in a house, or sleep in a bed, or wear clothes, or drink alcohol, or smoke tobacco, or touch money, or engage in trade.
3. All the habits of Man are evil.
4. No animal must ever tyrannize over his own kind. Weak or strong, clever or simple, we are all brothers.
5. No animal must ever kill any other animal. All animals are equal.

Finally he ended his speech with a song named “Beasts of England” which is to encourage the animals to Rebellion for the world they long for. Following, all the animals sang the song even louder and louder until the shot by Mr. Jones. And the farm became quiet again.
